Carpet Stain First Aid: What to Do in the First Five Minutes

Spills happen. What you do in the first few minutes decides whether a spill becomes a permanent stain. These first steps work for most everyday spills on carpet, rugs and upholstery.

1. Blot, don't scrub

Grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and press down firmly to soak up as much as you can. Work from the outside of the spill toward the center so it doesn't spread. Scrubbing pushes the spill deeper and can fray the carpet fibers.

2. Scoop solids first

For food, mud or anything thick, lift it off with a spoon or a dull knife before blotting. Let mud dry completely, then vacuum it up.

3. Rinse with a little cold water

Dampen the spot lightly with cold water and blot again. Repeat until nothing more transfers to your cloth. Hot water can set some stains, especially protein stains like blood or milk.

4. Don't soak the carpet

Too much water soaks through to the padding, where it can cause odor and bring the stain back up as it dries (called wicking). Use small amounts and blot often.

5. Test any cleaner first

If you use a spot cleaner, test it on a hidden area such as inside a closet. Some products bleach, leave sticky residue that attracts dirt, or set the stain. Keep the label of anything you use and tell us about it; it helps us choose the right treatment.

Pet accidents

Blot up as much urine as you can right away, then rinse lightly with cold water and blot again. Avoid heavily scented products; they mask the smell without removing the source. Urine often soaks into the pad and subfloor, which is why odor can come back after the surface looks clean. Our pet odor removal treats every affected layer.

Red wine, coffee and dark drinks

Blot immediately, rinse with cold water and keep blotting. Don't rub, and don't pour on anything you haven't tested. The sooner a professional treats a dye stain, the better the chance of removing it.

When to call a professional

  • The stain is spreading, getting bigger or changing color
  • It keeps coming back after it dries
  • There's an odor, especially from pets
  • It's on a wool rug, a delicate fabric or upholstery
  • You've already tried a product and the stain is still there
